In an exceptional setting facing the village, the castle of Lourmarin (classified as a historical monument in 1973) is the first renaissance castle in Provence. Built in the 15th century, its owner had a renaissance wing built (1526) with a remarkable unity and purity of style. In 1920 Laurent Vibert, a university professor, bought and restored the castle. At his death he bequeathed it to the Academy of Sciences, Agriculture, Arts and Belles Lettres of Aix so that it could become an artists’ residence.
